Frank Heyl- Biography

World Renowned Expert On Military Survival Training and Gear

Frank Heyl served as the principal instructor and director for training with the military and contract survival school for 23 years. He was appointed chairman of the Oregon Search and Rescue Council in 1975. As chairman he assisted in the writing of the State Search and Rrescue Training Standards. During the construction of the Alaska petroleum pipeline he served as a cold weather survival consultant and worked with manufacturesers in the design specifications for the project cold weather protective clothing. As a consultant he collaborated with the American Petroleum Institute in the rewriting and editing of the pipeline safetly manual, "Staying Alive In the Arctic." The manual became the standard for cold weather survival training in Alaska and Russia. His 40 years in teh military inluded serving in the U.S. Army Air Force, U.S. Air Force Reserve and Army National Guard. During his tenure in the military he flew medical evacuation and search and rescue missions. Additional military duties included protective equipment and survival training. Between military tours, Frank was with the Oregon Moseum of Science and Industry as Director of Outdoor Education where he instituted a survival training program for youngsters and their parents, and also co-authored several survival training devices which have been used in survival schools over 30 years. They include Edible and Poisonous Plants of the Eastern States, Edible and Poisonous Plants of the Western States and Survival Playing Cards.

7. Developed the design specifications for the cold weather protective clothing Alyeska Service Company and Standard Alaska Production Company.
